With a year-round temperate climate there's never a shortage of things to do in Los Angeles, where major festivals and events are held somewhere in the city every week. This month-by-month guide features some of the highlights.

January: Tournament of Roses Parade

Each year, on 1 January, Los Angeles rings in the new year in Pasadena with the Tournament of Roses Parade just before the extremely popular Rose Bowl football game.  It's a celebration that’s been held for more than a 100 years – a mesmerising mix of flowers, music and sport.

February: Academy Awards

Get ready for that once-in-a-lifetime selfie as the world-famous Academy Awards take place during late February. The glitz and glamor all happens at the Kodak Theatre in the heart of Hollywood, as celebrities march down the red carpet looking their best.

April: Fiesta Broadway

LA's Fiesta Broadway on the last Sunday of April is considered the largest Cinco de Mayo festival in the world. Thirty square blocks of downtown are blocked off for a massive fiesta of piñatas, Mexican food, music and mayhem. April is also the only time that Gene Autry’s ranch opens to the public as part of The Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival.

June: LA Gay Pride

LA Gay Pride in early June is a massive three-day celebration of the city's enormous gay and lesbian population. As one of the largest gay pride events in the US, the massive parade attracts nearly 400,000 visitors each year.

July: Independence Day

The city hosts many events for Independence Day, but perhaps the most spectacular takes place at the Hollywood Bowl, where fireworks are launched in sync with performances by the LA Philharmonic and other artists.

September: LA County Fair

The LA County Fair takes place in late summer and into early autumn each year at the fairgrounds in Pomona.

October: Abbot Kinney Festival

Venice Beach becomes even livelier during its annual Abbot Kinney Festival in late September/early October, an artsy street fair showing beautiful and quirky artworks for sale.

November: The Hollywood Christmas Parade

The Hollywood Christmas Parade officially kicks off the city's Christmas season with a mammoth parade of floats, music and celebrity appearances on the first Sunday after Thanksgiving.

December: Marina del Rey Boat Parade

The Marina Del Rey Boat Parade is one of the most popular of many holiday-themed events in the region, as locals and tourists assemble to witness the boats decked out with Christmas lights.
