Itinerary
Travel to the tidal flats of Hudson Bay and Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge, the best vantage point to view the pristine beauty of the Canadian Arctic and its majestic polar bear inhabitants. The Hudson Bay Odyssey trip boasts an impressive variety of wildlife and it is from Nanuk where you will have the best possibilities on the planet to encounter polar bear mothers and their adorable cubs.
Day 1 Winnipeg
Make your way to Winnipeg the capital of Manitoba. Depending on when you arrive, there could be some time to explore the city at leisure. This evening there will be a hosted information evening where you can meet your fellow travellers and anticipate your departure from civilisation.
Day 2 Winnipeg to Churchill to Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge
Early this morning you’ll depart Winnipeg for Churchill. Upon arrival in Churchill, you’ll be transferred by private charter flight to Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge. Once you arrive at the lodge, your hosts will show you around and give you time to settle in. After lunch and an orientation, enjoy an afternoon of exploring the coastline in search of the ‘’Great Ice Bear’. Back at the lodge, enjoy appetizer hour followed by a signature tundra-inspired meal. After dinner there will be an informative lecture or presentation narrated by a local guide. If it’s a clear night you may also have the chance to view one of the spectacular Aurora Borealis displays which are common in this area.
Day 3 Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge
Each morning after a hot breakfast, your guides will outline a plan for the day’s excursions. If there are bears near the Lodge, your morning tour may be delayed to take advantage of these photo and observation opportunities. After dinner each night, there will be lectures or slide shows from local staff. Staff will monitor the Aurora Borealis each night and, if conditions are optimal, they will provide a gentle wake-up call to ensure you don’t miss any opportunities to witness and photograph this spectacular phenomenon.
Day 4 Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge
Daily outings may include the following, depending on weather and ground conditions: Coastal exploration to the tidal flats and Hudson Bay shoreline. An exploration of the river deltas and vast beach ridges. Routes will vary but ample time will be provided to photograph polar bears and the other wildlife that live in these unique environments.
Day 5 Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge
Enjoy more exploration of the tundra and wildlife spotting opportunities. Alternatively - the lodge is always staffed, so you also have the option to stay behind to take photos of the wildlife around the Lodge or just relax and enjoy the pristine view.
Day 6 Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge to Winnipeg
After another hearty Lodge breakfast, you’ll begin air transfers back to Churchill. Have your cameras ready for the return flight as it affords excellent opportunities for great aerial shots. Back in Churchill, you’ll spend the day exploring the town and learning about its rich history as a seaport and ex-military town. Your tour will include stops such as the Parks Canada exhibit, the Itsanitaq Museum, and the Polar Bear Jail. Along the way, your guide will point out murals that were commissioned in 2016 as part of the SeaWalls mural festival. Before a group dinner, your guide will give you free time to shop for last-minute souvenirs at the unique gift stores in Churchill. Your flight south to Winnipeg will take place this evening.
